Rattlers women’s golf squad books spot at CCAA Nationals

NISKU, AB – A trio of Medicine Hat Rattlers reached the podium near Edmonton on Sunday, claiming a silver medal at ACAC Golf Provincials at RedTail Landing Golf Club.

The women’s team of Nicole Schultz, Sierra Zukowski, and Ciara Bonogofski shot a combined score of 39 over par on Sunday to secure a second-place finish for the Rattlers.

Winning silver by a single stroke over Red Deer College, the Rattlers have now qualified for the 2017 CCAA National Golf Championships in Oshawa, Ontario later this month.

Nicole Schultz was the top placing Rattler over the weekend, ending her tournament in fourth place overall at 17 over par.

Five shots off Schultz’s pace was her teammate Zukowski, winding up in seventh place among the 14 competitors.

Bonogofski completed her first tournament of the year in 14th place at 35 over par, after missing the first two regional tournaments due to injury.

Red Deer College’s Shaye Leidenius went wire-to-wire, winning the ACAC Provincial Championship by nine strokes.

The men’s team wasn’t able to secure one of the two national berths however, ending the tournament in fifth place at a combined 91 over par.

Braden Schacher had the top score for the Rattlers men, finishing in ninth place with a two-day score of +17.

Just behind Schacher was Matt Taylor, one stoke behind in a tie for 10th, and Kent Lesko and Kelton Hope who both marked their final scorecards at 19 over and tied for 13th place.

In 30th place was Mitchell Morrison at 33 over after two days, Brett Griscowsky wound up in 32nd position on Sunday, while Troy Ferguson rounded out the pack in 33rd.

Michael Harrison from the University of Alberta-Augustana was the top finisher, shooting a four over, 76 on Sunday to win the tournament by a single stroke.

CCAA National Golf Championships will run from October 17 to 20 in Ontario at Durham College.
