MEDICINE HAT, ALTA- A downtown bus stop has been severely damaged, after a driver lost control near a local gas station on Friday morning.

According to police, a 55 year old woman was exiting the Co-Op Gas Bar located near the intersection of Braemar Street Southeast and Maple Avenue.

While leaving the station to head south, the woman lost control of her vehicle, and drove into a nearby bus stop. The structure sustained major damage, and the car stopped after hitting a nearby retaining wall.

The 55 year old has now been charged under the Traffic Safety Act with careless driving. The damage to the stop is estimated at $2000, and there were no injuries reported from the scene.

Police said it was lucky no one was inside the stop, as transit users often wait inside.
