Only time will tell if Alberta will do away with Daylight Saving time

MEDICINE HAT, AB. – The idea of getting rid of Daylight Saving Time for the province of Alberta is not off the table, said Premier Rachel Notley on September 19, 2017.

Notley says she plans to bring it to a vote in the legislature, despite a legislative committee unanimously voting to abandon the bill.

Drew Barnes, MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat, has heard mixed reviews about doing away with changing of the clocks twice a year.

“It was all over the map, people that wanted to leave it the same, people that wanted to align with Saskatchewan, people that wanted to have one consistent time with interior BC,” he said.

Perry Deering, president of the Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce said he was not sold on the idea of staying on Mountain Standard Time like Saskatchewan year-round. He raised concerns about having a two hour time difference with British Columbia. And he believes it would negatively impact business.

“When we talk about logistics for companies, when we talk about carriers, airline carriers they have there scheduling there procedures, they’ve got a lot of things that ordinary people don’t,” he said.

Daylight Saving Time has been used in Alberta for 47 years. Deering said he doesn’t want to do away with it.

“If you ask a lot of business people they`ll use some really common terminology,” he said. “Don’t fix what isn’t broken.”
