Pythons undefeated in bantam football season

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A local bantam football team is tearing its way through the first portion of the football season.

The Parkside Pythons have won their first three games of the season, all by massive margins.

Head coach Lloyd Bray, who is in his 22nd year with the Pythons, noted last season, his squad had a lot of Grade 8 students as starters, with many returning this year.

“They had a decent season last year, and they’re all back this year, so that experience, and the fact that they kind of gave it up at the end of the season last year made them really hungry this year,” he said.

Bray says there’s a lot of hard work by his players to ensure the team remains successful and competitive.

“You’ve got to have the talent, that’s number one,” he said. “This is a very fast team, we’ve got tons of speed. Usually when we have speed, we’re lacking in size, and vice-versa, but this year we’ve got some size.”

The Pythons are made up of Grade 7-9 students from several different schools. While the majority are from Parkside School in Redcliff and Crescent Heights High School, there are also players from Schuler and Irvine on the team.

Over his time as coach, Bray has seen many different teams, and he says this one is looking special.

“The key thing is a mixture of a lot of experience and talent,” he said. “We’ve got people that are fast, we have people who are big that have played for five or six years already. The coaching has been done, it’s just a matter of assembling them and putting them in the right spots, and hoping it all turns out right.”

The Pythons are travelling to Maple Creek on Friday, hoping to keep their undefeated streak alive.
