DESERT BLUME, AB – Two days of competitive golf wrapped up at Desert Blume Golf Club on Sunday afternoon with the final round of the ACAC South Regional Tournament.

University of Alberta-Augustana’s Michael Harrison walked away with the trophy in the men’s division, firing a one over, 73 on Sunday to win the championship by two strokes.

Medicine Hat College’s Matt Taylor once again had a great second day of competition, as the North Regional champion was the lone golfer to shoot under par on Sunday.

He finished the round with a two under, 70 and ended the tournament tied for fourth place, five shots behind Harrison.

Brett Griscowsky was the next highest Rattler to finish on Sunday, winding up tied for 20th place with a two-day total of 18 over par.

Two strokes behind Griscowsky was fellow Rattler Troy Ferguson in 23rd place, while teammates Kent Lesko, Kelton Hope, and Mitchell Morrison all tied for 24th place at 21 over par.

In the team event, the Rattlers shot a combined 25 over par on the day and wound up in fifth place out of seven schools.

As for the women’s tournament, Elizabeth Stewart from Grant MacEwan University shot up the leaderboard with a three over, 75 to take the women’s championship by a single stroke.

For the second straight tournament, Nicole Schultz was the top Rattler with a 12 over, 84 on her final day to wind up in fifth place overall.

Right behind her was freshman teammate Sierra Zukowski, who was 15 over on the day and ended the tournament with a sixth place finish.

Zukowski said although she didn’t finish on the podium, she was pleased with how the home tournament went.

“It’s gone pretty well overall,” said Zukowski. “Some doubles in there that were kind of tough, but then came back after them with some birdies, a few pars, and worked through them.”

Schultz and Zukowski doubled up for the team event, helping Medicine Hat to a silver medal finish behind Grant MacEwan.

Zukowski said chemistry on the course is beginning to form in the early part of the season.

“Me and Nicole have been shooting pretty well, pretty consistent,” she said. “Kind of chiselling down the scores a little bit each day, each tournament. So, we just got to keep grinding through and shaving off scores wherever we can.”

It’s the second top-10 finish in a row for the local golfer, who ended North Regionals in seventh place.

Competing in her first collegiate tournaments, Zukowski said she’s easing into ACAC play this month.

“My first tournament, it was a little nerve-wracking the first day for sure,” said Zukowski. “But, now I’m kind of getting into the groove of it and just enjoying every moment, happy that I’m out here playing.”

The ACAC Golf Championships will be held next weekend, with the Rattlers men’s and women’s teams competing in Edmonton.
