Thousands raised for African schools by Test of Humanity racers

REDCLIFF, AB – For many outdoor events this time of year, an overcast sky can put a damper on the festivities.

That was not the case in the coulees just outside of Redcliff, as the second annual ‘Test of Humanity’ was held on Saturday.

Local mountain bikers loaded up their gear for the circuit, which saw competitors peddle a 7.5 kilometre loop as many times as possible over a four-hour time frame.

It was the second time Murray Barker took part in the event, and said conditions were perfect for the 35 riders that competed.

“The trails here are in great shape, 670 [Collective] has done a fantastic job,” said Barker. “Today was a good day because it was dry, that makes it really nice, it wasn’t hot. So, yeah it was a good challenge.”

Brought to the ‘Badlands’ by Richard and Deborah Northcott in 2016, the event raises funds for school children in Africa through the Canadian Humanitarian Society.

Event coordinators are estimating between $6,000 and $7,000 was raised locally on Saturday.

Head organizer Greg Watson said while the trails can be challenging, competitors from all ages seemed to have a blast along the dirt pathways.

“The scenery, the challenge of the riding, and the types of riding for all levels,” said Watson. “From beginners up to the most advanced riders can enjoy them.”

Barker added the race was made even better by the families and young trail riders that made the trip down.

“I think it’s good to get the youth racing,” he said. “The kids [races] are always funny to watch, almost comedic sometimes, because they try so hard. It’s the future generation and we got to keep that going, got to support that.”

According to Watson, planning has started for next year’s event and those wanting to help organize can visit CyclePath in Medicine Hat for more discussions.
