MEDICINE HAT, AB. – Kidseat Recyclers made a stop at London Drugs in Medicine Hat on Saturday September 23, 2017 to collect used and expired car seats.

Melanie Ridson-Betcher, Kidseat Recyclers Director said the program has been running since 2009 and is based out of Calgary, AB.

“Car seats are big and bulky, they take up a lot of space and they are all made of material that can be re-used. So the plastic that we take out of car seats often goes to make plastic decking and fencing,” she explained.

Ridson-Betcher said that the metal off the car seats can also be removed, recycled and melted down to create other products.

“Our mandate is to make sure we keep as much out of the land fill as we can,” she said.

The program estimates it will collected over 2500 car seats by the end of the year and charges a $10 levy per seat to cover the cost of the program explained Ridson-Betcher.

She said the program is wrapping up for the year and will start back up in the spring.
