Women’s volleyball team hoping for strong season

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The coach of the Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s volleyball team says her team is ready to get the season underway

The Rattlers finished in last place in the ACAC south zone last year with a 4-20 record, but head coach Kim Stonehouse says there is a lot of energy present with the team during the first practices.

“I’ve seen a really competitive spirit in all of them,” she said. “The incoming players have come in ready to go, and they’re challenging the returners. As a coach, that’s something you want to see out of your new players.”

Stonehouse describes the new players as “athletic,” “eager,” and not afraid to take chances.

Seven players have returned to the team this year, says Stonehouse, including all but one of last year’s starters. The Rattlers coming back are Laura Velcoff, Brooke Christie, Kennedy Lewis, Shaya Suchy, McKenzie Griffith, Amber Stigter, and Paige Burton.

“We’re finally starting to get that buy in to what the culture is here, and it’s nice to see that the returning players are setting the standard and letting the incoming players know that this is what we need to do to be competitive this year,” she said.

The team is travelling to British Columbia this weekend for several preseason games against Vancouver Island University, University of the Fraser Valley, Douglas College and Capilano University.

Both volleyball teams begin their regular season on the road on October 13th, travelling to Lethbridge College to battle the Kodiaks. The team’s home opener takes place on Oct. 14, also against the Kodiaks. The women play at 6 p.m., while the men play at 8 p.m. both days.
