MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Tigers have announced who will be wearing the Captain’s C when they open the Western Hockey League regular season.

Overage forward Mark Rassell was named team captain on Thursday. The Tigers previously announced Mason Shaw would be captain for the fall campaign, but an ACL tear has sidelined him for at least six months.

“Mark is a very mature person,” said head coach and general manager Shaun Clouston. “He’s dedicated, he’s committed, he’s really improved tremendously through his hard work and commitment.

“He’s an intelligent guy. He cares about his teammates. He has a real good feel for what’s going on in the room…he’s a real good person, and we feel lucky, that, in Mason’s absence, we have a guy who will do an outstanding job.”

Clouston says when Shaw returns to the ice from his injury, he has the option of wearing the C.

Last season, the Calgary-born forward played 72 games, scoring a team-high 36 goals and notching 25 assists.

In 11 playoff games last season, Rassell scored seven goals.

Last season, Rassell was awarded the Community Service Award at the team’s award banquet, sharing it with goaltender Nick Schneider.

“He’s quite aware for a person his age, he’s able to look out there and see what’s going on, and he knows how people look up to the players,” said Clouston. “He knows that, if there is some underprivileged situation out there, it can mean a lot to go out there to get involved to help out.”

There is no word yet about assistant captains for the team.
