Shaw named captain; different player to dawn “C”

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Mason Shaw is the captain of the Medicine Hat Tigers, although a different player will dawn the “C” on his chest come Friday night.

Tigers head coach & GM Shaun Clouston says Shaw’s captaincy was decided earlier this month, but after the Minnesota Wild draft pick tore his ACL, the team is resorting to a different option for the time being.

“Hopefully there is a point sometime that he’s able to come back, maybe in the playoffs,” said Clouston. “But we haven’t made a decision to the adjustments yet.

“We’ll address that, and the players will have a say, and we’ll move from there.”

Shaw will go under the knife on September 25, repairing a right ACL tear he sustained in the Traverse City Prospects Tournament with the Wild on September 10. The 18-year-old will likely miss the next six months with the injury, hoping to return to action ahead of the playoffs.

Until then, Clouston says another player will wear the “C”.

“I really believe in that, I believe you have to have one guy with a little more responsibility,” he added. “That person is a liaison between the coaches and the players.”

The Tabbies open the regular season in Lethbridge on Friday (7:00pm) before welcoming the ‘Canes to the Canalta Centre in their home opener on Saturday (7:30pm).
