Fischer recovering from injury at Flames training camp

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Tigers will likely be without one of their veteran forwards when the WHL regular season kicks off on Friday.

Zach Fischer is currently going through concussion protocol after a collision at Calgary Flames training camp last week.

“He got hit into the boards last week, and so, he’s been going through the protocol, feeling much better, but taking precautions, and making sure that he’s doing the right thing before he gets back on the ice,” said head coach and general manager Shaun Clouston.

Clouston adds the Tigers and Flames have been in contact since Fischer’s injury occurred, and he says Fischer’s condition has been improving.

However, Clouston does not expect Fischer to put on his Tigers jersey on Friday in Lethbridge or during the home opener on Saturday at the Canalta Centre.

“We’re expecting a full recovery, and a fairly speedy recovery, but his return to play time is a little up in the air,” he said. “This weekend would be probably unlikely.”

Clouston adds Fischer was expected to get some preseason action with the Flames after having a successful rookie camp.

Fischer’s injury is the latest to hit the Tigers heading into the WHL season. Last week, a MRI revealed forward Mason Shaw torn his ACL during Minnesota Wild training camp, and he could be out for as long as six months following surgery.

Tigers defenceman Kristians Rubins is recovering from a shoulder injury, while goaltender Jordan Hollett is still recovering from mononucleosis. Tigers forward Mark Rassell remains at Calgary Flames training camp, though he is a healthy scratch for games against Edmonton on Monday.
