SUFFIELD, AB — Cenovus is completing clean up on the site of a produced water leak earlier this week.

According to an emailed statement from the company, a pipeline carrying produced water leaked at Cenovus’ oil operations near Suffield Monday afternoon. Produced water is a byproduct from oil and gas extraction that occurs naturally in the reservoir.

The pipeline, which did not carry oil or natural gas, was immediately shut down once the leak was spotted and the water was fully contained. The company says the cleanup is nearly complete and should be finished by the weekend.

“There was no public safety concern and minimal threat to the environment,” the statement says. “The initial estimate of the volume was a few hundred cubic metres. We won’t have a more exact number until the cleanup is finished.”

Both the Alberta Energy Regulator and  Suffield Industry Range Control were notified, the statement says.

The cause of the leak is under investigation.
