MEDICINE HAT, ALTA-Two intersections in Medicine Hat were jammed with emergency workers on Monday afternoon, following a pair of linked crashes with a possible stolen truck.

According to police, the first crash was in front of Crescent Heights High School and Division Avenue NE, with the driver of the truck fleeing the scene, and causing another collision at Parkview Drive and 12th Street N.E.

The male driver then abandoned his truck, and was arrested a short time later.

City police are now in the middle of investigating both crashes, which resulted in the death of one woman at Parkview Drive and 12th Street N.E., as well as injuries for those involved at both scenes.

The extent of those injuries are not yet known.

The Medicine Hat Fire Department has been assisting police in the investigation.

Platoon Chief Tom Coffey described what first responders discovered on scene.

“I was at the scene at 12th Street and Parkview, and there was a lot of damage,” said Coffey. “Both vehicles had sustained a lot of damage at that location. So, it was a bit of a wreck.”

One vehicle was left on its side as a result of the crash near Crescent Heights High School, which took place before school let out.

Coffey said police are expected to remain on scene for at least the next few hours.

“I believe that the police are still investigating both of those scenes to probably figure out whether they’re connected, or whatever is going on,” he said. “So, the police are right now involved in those investigations, yes.”

Motorists are asked to avoid the area of 12 Street Southeast for the next several hours.

Parkview Drive reopened Tuesday Morning just after 1:30 A.M.
