MEDICINE HAT, AB. – The Medicine Hat and District Labour Council held their annual BBQ in Riverside Veterans’ Memorial Park on September 4, 2017. Past council president David Condon, said they gave out over 300 burgers.

“We decided to celebrate Labour Day in a different way than other places do, and it’s to show that there are working people out there or unemployed people who are still struggling,” he said.

The event is in it’s 20th year and Condon has seen a shift in the type of people who are unemployed in the city of Medicine Hat.

“I think we are seeing a lot more people in what you would call precarious work, so there is a lot of people who don’t have a steady job or a long term commitment to a job,” he explained.

The Medicine Hat and District Labour Council is comprised of postal workers, nurses, educational support workers, the health sciences, Superstore, Safeway and a few other workers groups both unionized and non-unionized workers.
