United Conservative Party finalizes leadership election process

CALGARY — The United Conservative Party has released details on how it will select a new leader in October

Voting will be conducted through preferential, non-weighted ballot by phone or online from 9 a.m on October 26 to 5 p.m. on October 28.

In order to vote, memberships must be purchased by 5 p.m. on September 29. Members will also be required to register to vote with proof of identity by 5 p.m. on October 13. The party says a registration website will be provided for this purpose.

The party has also announced a deadline for those wishing to run in the leadership race. Applications must be made to the Leadership Election Committee by 5 p.m. on September 12. Candidates for the leadership must have been a member of the UCP or one of the legacy parties for at least six months before filing an application, and must support the principles outlined in the Agreement in Principle which currently governs the party. The entry fee for candidates is $75,000.

Five debates around the province are planned, with more details made available once locations are finalized.

Results will be announced on October 28 at the Metropolitan Centre in Calgary, shortly after the vote closes.

Currently, Jason Kenney, Brian Jean, Doug Schweitzer and Jeff Callaway are running for leadership.
