LETHBRIDGE – The next court appearance for Denzel Dre Colton Bird will likely be a significant one, as it’s anticipated he will be entering guilty pleas at that time.

Bird faces charges that include attempted murder and aggravated sexual assault, for an alleged attack on a 25-year old Lethbridge woman in September of 2016.

Robin McIntyre appeared as an agent for Bird’s lawyer, Tonii Roulston, on Thursday, asking for an adjournment to Sept. 5, and noting that when they return to court they intend to enter guilty pleas.

While McIntyre wasn’t able to discuss the specific charges Bird plans to will admit to, she said it’s part of a deal with the Crown, and that it will not include all of the charges against him.

In addition to attempted murder and aggravated sexual assault, Bird is also charged with sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated assault and break and enter.

Those charges relate to an incident on Sept. 30, 2016. Members of the Lethbridge Police Service say a 25-year old woman was walking to work that morning, when she was struck with a weapon, dragged into an alley off 6 Avenue South and sexually assaulted.

The woman sustained life-threatening injuries, which required months of treatment in a Calgary hospital.

Police say there was no apparent connection between the accused and victim, and that they believe the attack was random.

The case has been marked by delays, as Bird originally hired Greg White as his lawyer in October of 2016, then proceeded to fire him, re-hire him, then fire him again, before retaining Roulston.
