MEDICINE HAT, AB – A 22-year-old man wanted for theft charges has been arrested in Medicine Hat.

According to a news release from the Medicine Hat Police Service, officers responded to a suspected overdose in an alley behind the 2500 block of 22 Avenue Southeast at around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. The male was in the drivers seat of a motor vehicle, and

After police arrived with EMS, the man was checked medically and cleared.

Inspector Joe West says police and EMS work to ensure a person is not in medical distress before an arrest is made.

“We always make sure they’re safe before they come into our custody,” he said on Friday. “In this case, he was assessed by EMS, and regained consciousness quite quickly once the police became involved and was arrested for the charges at hand.”

While the man was being examined, police ran the licence plate of the car and determined it had been stolen from a residence earlier in the day. The man was taken into custody.

The man was also found to be wanted in connection with a break and enter on Carswell Road Southeast which had occurred on August 21. Numerous home electronics were stolen in the break-in.

The male is waiting for a judicial interim release for possessing stolen property (the vehicle), break and enter, and theft. As the charges have not yet been sworn in court, he cannot be named.
