MEDICINE HAT, AB — A 36 year old man was arrested early Thursday morning after evading police in a stolen truck.

According to a news release from the Medicine Hat Police Service, officers responded to the Riverside area for a report of an erratic driver in a Ford truck.

Police located the truck and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled and began driving evasively to avoid police. Officers did not pursue the suspect, and set up stationary containment points to control the area.

According to police, the driver tried to breach the containment several times, and eventually abandoned the truck in an alley and fled on foot. A foot chase was started, and the suspect allegedly broke into a house while the family was present. The owner of the home confronted the man, and police chased the suspect out into an alley with the K9 unit and other officers in tow. The driver was taken into custody.

According to police, the driver is from the Red Deer area. He has not been named, as charges haven’t been officially sworn against him. He is currently awaiting a bail hearing on charges of possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of stolen property under $5,000, evading police, dangerous driving, being in a dwelling unlawfully, resisting arrest and four counts of breaching a weapons prohibition, after being found in possession of ammunition.
