MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service have arrested and charged two people for illegal dumping at a local non-profit organization.

According to a news release, two individuals were captured on camera unloading goods outside of The Post. The video allowed Medicine Hat Bylaw officers to confirm the identity of the accused, who were both charged with offences under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act. The two were fined $115 for the infractions.

Police are reminding the public that unlawful dumping at charity bins through the city is an expensive problem which often results in non-profit organizations having to pay to clear unwanted items. While many items left at charities are donated with good intentions, many items cannot be sold due to vandalism, theft or exposure to the elements.

Last month, The Post changed its donation policy, refusing donations made outside of business hours. They’ve also installed security cameras outside the store in an effort to deter illegal dumping.
