SWIFT CURRENT, SASK. — Connie Oakes is heading back to prison after being sentenced in Swift Current provincial court late Thursday afternoon.

Oakes, appearing via CCTV from Regina, was sentenced to 21 months in prison in connection with an assault and stabbing near Maple Creek earlier this year.

She received a 21 month prison sentence on charges of aggravated assault, forcible confinement and uttering threats. She also received a 90 day concurrent sentence for an unrelated assault charge from June 2016.

With credit for time served, Oakes will serve 14 months in prison.

She also received two years probation with no-contact orders, was ordered to provide a DNA sample, and is prohibited from owning firearms for 10 years.

Oakes, along with Ricky Rockthunder, was arrested April 5 after a man was stabbed outside of Maple Creek. She pleaded guilty to the charges on April 20.

Rockthunder remains in custody on his charges, and appears in Swift Current court again on August 30.

Oakes previously served prison time in connection with the 2011 murder of Casey Armstrong in Medicine Hat.

Her charges were stayed in April 2016 after the Alberta Court of Appeal ordered new trials for Oakes and her co-accused Wendy Scott. The retrial was ordered after Scott, who has an IQ of 50 and cognitive difficulties, recanted her confession and testimony.

The only evidence against Oakes in the murder came from Scott’s testimony. There was no forensic evidence or motive linking the two women to the killing.
