MEDICINE HAT, AB — Two weeks before its hallways are filled with students, the principal of the city’s newest school granting media a sneak peek of what kids can expect.

Principal Jason Peters gave media the first look of the inside of Dr. Ken Sauer School. The Kindergarten to Grade 6 school, located at 20 Terrace Drive NE, has its first day of classes on September 5.

“There’s lots of last-minute finishes and efficiencies to finish up, but we’re in the building and we’re starting to set up classrooms, so we’re excited about that.”

Peters says the school has seen more than 250 students register to attend, and the school is equipped to handle up to 300. At present, the school has hired 12 staff members, and Peters says they expect to hire more.

One of the last things the school has to install is the playground. Parent council has completed fundraising for the playground, and will be installing it from Friday to Sunday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Peters says volunteers are especially needed for Sunday, and those interested in helping out are asked to call the school’s office at 403-528-6577.

The school has several features which Peters says helps set it apart from others in the city.

“There’s so much natural light, so much flexible space where we can connect classrooms and find smaller areas for kids to work, quieter areas , but some large open spaces too with lots of light coming in,” he said. “We’re really excited to see it put to use.”

Parents will be able to see the school for themselves Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. and Friday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The school is also hosting Meet the Teacher night from 6- 7:30 p.m. on August 30.
