MEDICINE HAT, AB — It’s a sign summer is coming to an end, and the hockey season is almost here.

The Canalta Centre has installed ice for the Medicine Hat Tigers, just in time for the team’s training camp this weekend.

Bret Jenkins, director of operations with the Canalta Centre, has been hard at work since Sunday to install the ice for the upcoming season.

“We had Cars and Guitars over the weekend, and we actually had the ice plant on during the Saturday show,” he said.

Jenkins said the base layers of the ice have were laid down on Monday night. The painting of lines and logos on the ice was the focus on Tuesday, with the plan of adding more layers to the surface after painting is done. It takes roughly one week to get the ice prepped to perfection for hockey.

Reverse osmosis water is used to create the ice, which Jenkins says ensures the logos continue to look crisp and fresh throughout the season

Ice technicians usually add their own signature twist, and Jenkins is no different. At centre ice, he adds a single red line on each side of the main red line at centre ice.

“It’s just a two-inch line on each side,” he said. “It looks so much cleaner and crisp. I love it.”

Tigers hockey returns to the Canalta Centre in 32 days.
