MEDICINE HAT, AB – The first “Farm to Table Feast and Fundraiser” took place at Newbauer Farms Saturday evening, guests were invited out for an open-air 4 course dinner served in the farm yard. Nicole Neubauer, Neubauer Farms said that the evening was meant to be one of a kind for the area.

“We have actually grown the vast majority of the vegetables, grown the chicken and the pork which is home raised, processed it locally, so there is a nice local feel to the evening and that has given us really cause to celebrate,” she said.

Neubauer stated that many producers can feel disconnected from the end use of their product due to selling to whole sale markets, and the event was a chance to inspire a connection between their customers and local agriculture.

In keeping with the local connection theme, all of the proceeds raised from the event will help support agriculture education for the Medicine Hat & District Childcare Association. They currently receive programming on the farm to connect urban children with hands on learning of where their food comes from, said Jennifer Usher, Coordinator for the Medicine Hat & District Childcare Association.

“Children from day homes, preschools and childcare centres visit Neubauer Farms to really experience what life on a farm is all about. They get to learn where there food is grown, they get to visit with the animals, sometimes they even get to find eggs with the chickens and play with the grain and see how flour is made,” she explained.

The funds raised from the dinner will go to help off set the costs of the childcare programs to visit the farm, said Usher. The programming allows the children to learn that many of the foods they enjoy from the supermarket can be grown locally in Medicine Hat and the surrounding areas.
