CFIA expands recall of raspberry mousse cakes

Aug 17, 2017 | 10:31 AM

OTTAWA — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is recalling several varieties of raspberry mousse cakes due to norovirus.

The initial warning was issued on August 11, initially in Quebec, but has been expanded to include Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick.

Consumers should not consume the product and retailers, hotels and restaurants have been told to not sell or serve the products. The CFIA is advising businesses to check with their supplier to see if they have the affected product.

People with norovirus usually develop symptoms of gastroenteritis within 24 to 48 hours, though some can start as soon at 12 hours after exposure. The primary symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach cramps, while low-grade fever, chills, headaches, fatigue and muscle aches are also present.

The recalled items includes cakes sold under the Laura Secord, Jessica, Michaud and Top Dessert labels. A full list of recalled items can be found here.

These products may also have been sold frozen or refrigerated, or clerk-served from bakery-pastry counters with or without a label or coding. Consumers who are unsure if they have purchased the affected product are advised to contact their retailer.

Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.
