Transit layoffs announced

MEDICINE HAT, AB — City staff have announced how many transit operators will lose their jobs once the new route changes take effect next month.

Five full time positions will be eliminated with the effected drivers being laid off.

The city is offering them a few options.

Tim McShane with the union representing city employees said five permanent, part-time positions have been created, but drivers may move into other city positions.

“With the layoffs, there is some protection under the collective agreement where they can move into other positions based on their seniority, so they have that option,” he said.

The city said last week the changes will reduce the operating costs of the transit system by $650,000 per year.
