MEDICINE HAT, AB — In response to an outbreak of whooping cough in the South Zone, Alberta Health Services is providing a booster clinic.

So far this year there have been 544 confirmed cases of the Pertussis virus, 289 of those have been in the zone which stretches from Medicine Hat to Lethbridge.

AHS says a majority of the cases are in children who have not been vaccinated.

Health officials say the less people who get vaccinated for whooping cough the more likely it is that even those who have received a vaccine could get the illness.

The booster clinics will be for children aged 10 to 12 by appointment only.

They will be held August 24, 30 and 31 at Higdon Hall on the Stampede grounds in Medicine Hat. To book an appointment parents must call in advance 403-502-8215.

There will also be clinics in Bow Island and Brooks.

People in Bow Island are asked to call 403-545-2296 to book an appointment for their children to receive a booster shot. That clinic will be held August 23, at the Provincial Building.

In Brooks the clinic will be located at the Lakeside Leisure Centre August 30 and 31. Appointments there can be made by calling 403-501-3333.
