SD76 rejects concerned parents petition for a third time

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Officials with School District 76 have once again rejected a petition put forward by a concerned parents group.

Back in July, the group resubmitted their petition after a judge ruled they were able amend the document.

When it was resubmitted, board chair Rick Massini said it still didn’t meet the requirements and gave the group two weeks to get their paperwork in order.

It was submitted a third time and staff have found the petition is 67 signatures short and pieces of information were pencilled in after witnesses provided signatures.

Massini said officials have met members of the group countless times and said the board has done its due diligence.

“I think we have satisfied, to the particular group, all the concerns that they had. They’ve indicated as such. But they want a public forum for reasons that we’re not completely sure of,” Massini said.

The parents group has been pushing to have their voice heard over issues surrounding a provincial policy on LGBTQ students, despite the board making changes to its policy back in May.
