Air quality advisory issued for southeastern Alberta

Southeast Alberta will see smoke today.

Due to the ongoing forest fires in British Columbia, smoke is drifting across Alberta. Poor air quality and reduced visibility are expected as the smoke travels across the province, though it’s expected to clear out later today with a cold front.

Residents may experience increased coughing, irritation of the throat, headaches, and shortness of breath due to the air quality.

Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

A notice from Environment Canada advised that masks are not the best way to protect health from smoke, and may instead lead to a false sense of security.

“People with lung diseases, such as asthma and COPD, can be particularly sensitive to air pollution,” read the notice.

“They will generally experience more serious health effects at lower levels. Pollution can aggravate their diseases, leading to increased medication use, doctor and emergency room visits, and hospital visits.”
