MEDICINE HAT, AB — Chalk it up to a little creativity.

The third annual Sunshine Chalk Art Festival is happening this weekend.

Second Street has been closed off to motorists, allowing artists to create their pieces on the roadway.

“It’s pretty exciting, you know, it’s always something different and you don’t know what you’re going to get sometimes,” said Les Schwabe with the City Centre Development Agency. “There’s certainly some talent among some of these people and it’s just wonderful to have them here.”

The festival features works from local artists, as well as artists from Lethbridge, Swift Current, Victoria and as far away as California.

Schwabe said the weekend event was inspired by a similar festival in Montana. He said people here wanted something different while still being able to enjoy the outdoors.

“Although it might not stay on the street real long, if a little water comes or rain, but nonetheless it is something a little different and the whole idea is, a beautiful summer day like this, get people downtown, wandering around and watch [the artists] perform,” he said.

The event continues through Sunday.
