Sage Watson finishes 6th; best finish in Canadian history

LONDON, UK — Hat High graduate Sage Watson raced to a sixth place finish in the women’s 400m hurdles final at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships in London, UK.

It’s the best finish of any Canadian in history, besting Rosey Edeh’s seventh place performance from the 1993 World Championships.

23-year-old Watson, taking hold of the eighth lane, finished with a time of 54.92 — 1.85 seconds behind gold medalist Kori Carter from the United States who stopped the clock at 53.07.

Olympic champion Dalilah Muhammad, Carter’s teammate, finished second with a time of 53.50 and Jamaica’s Ristananna Tracey rounded out the podium with a personal best time of 53.74.

An epic summer continues for the Seven Person’s product. Watson set a meet record at the Canadian Track and Field Championships t earn her spot in London. She also put the finishing touches on an illustrious college career with an NCAA Championship in June.

This is also Watson’s best finish in an international major. Her best finish prior to this year’s world championships came in the Rio Olympic Games, making it into the semi-finals and finishing 11th.
