Cypress Hills park staff remaining vigilant during fire ban

Elkwater, AB – Officials with the Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park say there weren’t any issues with people trying to skirt the current ban on campfires over the long weekend.

For the most part, Mike Ractcliffe, Head of Visitor Services, says people are aware of the ban and cooperate with park staff and follow the rules.

With a  fire ban in place, Forestry officials have supplied extra manpower, including  a standby crew at night.

Precautions include establishing a sprinkler plan around the Elkwater town site to set up a wet zone in case a fire does break out.

Crews also use a helicopter to patrol the park to look for unauthorized fires.

Ractcliffe says even though camp fires are banned, it’s still a good idea for people to have water on hand, even if they’re using a propane fire pit.
