MEDICINE HAT, AB — The man charged with making a false report in connection with a massive search of the South Saskatchewan River in June made his first court appearance on Thursday.

Drew Tweed, 41, briefly appeared in Medicine Hat provincial court, where his matters were adjourned to August 17. Tweed is expected to enter a plea on that date.

Tweed was charged on June 15, eight days following a massive search of the South Saskatchewan River.

On June 7, authorities received reports a man had fallen into the South Saskatchewan River. Redcliff RCMP, the Medicine Hat Fire Department and South East Alberta Search and Rescue were on the river for 12 hours, searching for the man, before the search was called off.

Medicine Hat Police investigated the claim, and according to a news release, contradictory statements and a lack of physical evidence helped them determine nobody was in the river that day.

Tweed is facing one charge of public mischief.

The case is not connected with the search of a man from British Columbia who fell into the river on May 31. The search for that man was suspended in early June.
