Willie Desjardins to coach Olympic Men’s Hockey Team

CALGARY —After months of speculation, Hockey Canada has officially announced who will lead Team Canada behind the bench at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang , South Korea.

Willie Desjardins, the former head coach of the Vancouver Canucks and the Medicine Hat Tigers, was announced as head coach of the National Men’s Hockey Team, while  Sean Burke was named general manager.

Desjardins coach the Vancouver Canucks for the past three seasons, and was fired as head coach in April, after the team missed the playoffs for two consecutive seasons.

During his time with the Tigers, Desjardins guided the team to two WHL championships in 2004 and 2007. He also led the Texas Stars of the AHL to the Calder Cup in 2014.

Desjardins has experience on an international level. In 2009, he was the assistant coach of Team Canada during the World Junior Hockey Championship team, and was named head coach the following year.

Desjardins will be joined by former Calgary Flames coach Dave King, Canucks player development consultant Scott Walker and Craig Woodcroft.
