Knights finish in second at District Tournament; heading to State Tournament on Thursday

HAVRE, MONTANA — The Medicine Hat Knights may be coming home with a second-place finish at the North District A Baseball tournament, but they’ve landed one of the two slots for the upcoming Class A State Tournament.

The Knights were defeated 12-5 by the Lewistown Redbirds Sunday afternoon in the tournament finals in Havre. The Redbirds and Knights will both represent the North Conference at the tournament this week.

The Knights and Redbirds were 4-4 in the fourth inning, when the Redbirds exploded, adding eight runs in the final innings.

Andrew Lalum led the Redbirds with three RBIs during the game, while Eric Knox had a pair of RBIs. Knox was also the winning pitcher for the Redbirds, allow 10 hits, five runs, five errors and striking out five batters in seven innings.

Keon Vereschagin, Zack Stark, Theryn Berndt , Ethan Boutkan and Ethan Bartram all batted in runs for the Knights during the game.

Justin Bourassa took the loss on the mound for the Knights, allowing six runs, eight hits, and striking out one batter in four-and-two-thirds innings.

At the tournament, Wyatt Bergen was selected to the North District All-Star team as an infielder, while Cavan Kolody was selected to the all-star team as an outfielder. Kolody was also named to the All State team.

The State tournament begins Thursday in Three Forks, Montana, and features the top two teams from the North, South, East and West Conferences. The schedule has not yet been announced.
