MEDICINE HAT, AB — The streets of downtown were covered with vendors Saturday for the 28th annual Chili Cookoff.

Twenty-four teams joined this years cook off, drawing in over 3000 people to the downtown core.

Operations Manager for City Center Development Agency (CCDA), Robin Anton said this year was very popular.

“It’s a great community event,” said Anton.  “It draws a lot of people in the downtown and that’s our main goal, is to help revitalize the downtown and draw people down here to help our businesses.”

The community also came together to vote on their favourite chili.

There are five categories in which a team can compete in; traditional chili, hot and spicy, salsa, pubs and restaurants, and people’s choice.

ATB Financial Chili Queens took home the award for best traditional chili.  Miywasin Friendship Centre won for best hot and spicy chili, Med Hat Youth Action came first for best salsa, and Station Coffee and was named best pub and restaurant chili.

Lastly, the fan favourite went to the Medicine Hat Fire Department.

Anton said the chili cook off was a “massive” success and the teams agreed.

Gilles Labine, Chili Queens member, said “our first year will not be our last,”
