MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat Police have confirmed one person is dead following the house explosion on Hudson Way NE on Wednesday.

The explosion destroyed the home and caused extensive damage to two neighbouring properties.

Members of the Major Crimes unit made the discovery of human remains in the evening while investigating the cause of the fire in the home where the fire originated.

An autopsy will be conducted in Calgary by the Medical Examiner’s office to determine the identity of the victim and the cause of death.

“The autospy is critical for us to determine identity and the cause of death,” said Staff Sergeant Trevor Humphries. “We have a lot of confidence in the medical examiner. They’re very skilled in determining cause of death, no matter what the condition of the remains so we’re very confident we’ll be able to help us determine the events that led up to the death.”

There were no injuries in the two neighbouring homes.

The file remains under investigation.
