MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat’s cricket community packed Southlands Park over the weekend for the finals of a city-wide tournament on Sunday night.

The Medicine Hat Cricket Association’s Open Tournament was held, with four teams hitting the field and playing for the city championship.

Team Punjab and Team Kerala met in the finals, with Team Punjab coming away with the victory by six wickets after a two and a half hour match.

Medicine Hat Cricket Association president Imran Ahmed said despite some howling winds at halftime, the teams played on.

“It was not raining, they still played in this wind,” said Ahmed. “It certainly impacted some bowling, basically pitching in other words. But, it certainly helped out the Punjab players who played it very well and won the tournament.”

This is one of many tournaments hosted in Medicine Hat this year, as their membership continues to grow.

Just under 200 residents are members of the local association, spanning multiple age groups and backgrounds.

Ahmed said cricket is much more than just a sport, especially with Indian or Pakistani roots.

“In Pakistan and India we don’t have great relationships, but here we are great friends,” he said. “So, the thing is we’re bringing the Indian and Pakistan communities together.”

Another city tournament is being planned at Southlands Park in late September.
