MEDICINE HAT, AB — It’s the beginning of a new era for the Junior B Cubs.

The club announced Monday night Medicine Hat Travelodge will be its major sponsor for three years. The team will be called the Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs for the next three seasons.

Cubs president Calvin Foster says the team is “very excited” and feeling “positive” about the partnership, adding it’s been in the works for almost six months.

Raj Behari, performance manager with the local Travelodge, says he’s excited to support an organization geared to helping young athletes.

“It means a lot to us to be able to provide an opportunity for local players to continue playing the game they love,” he said.

The new name also comes complete with a new look, as the Cubs will now wear blue, silver and white jerseys.

“We actually looked at a few things, not just because the Travelodge is a navy blue,” said Foster. “That did help, but also in our league. You look in our league, and what colours (other teams have)…You’ll recognize our jerseys as kind of the prototype of the Winnipeg Jets colours… We like the navy, there’s no other team in the league that has navy, silver and white.”

The Cubs officially open up their main camp on September 5, and Foster says next year’s team will likely be younger and hungry to improve from last season.

“(We’re) building upon last season, making the playoffs, but now we want to go beyond making the playoffs,” he said. “We’re always growing.”

“We have a really good core of individuals that are committed and are positive. We’re ready to get going.”
