Jul 9, 2017 | 7:45 AM

LETHBRIDGE – A record that had stood for more than 130 years was shattered by the heat wave that has settled onto southern Alberta.

The high Friday  July 7 was 36.7 degrees Celsius. That beat the daily record high of 35.6 set in 1886, the very first year weather records were kept in Lethbridge.

Other records were set across the region (old record in parentheses):

-Claresholm: 36.1 degrees Celsisu(33.0, 1985)
-Pincher Creek: 33.2 degrees Celsius (32.8 1943)
-Vauxhall: 36.2 degrees Celsius (35.7, 1989)
-Waterton Lakes National Park gate: 33.6  degrees Celsius(30.0, 1985)

Heat warnings remain in effect for all but the westernmost parts of southern Alberta. Environment Canada says, aside from a brief respite early next week, daytime highs are expected to remain in the 30s for the foreseeable future.

A heat warning is issued for southern Alberta if daytime highs are expected to be 32 or higher with overnight lows no cooler than 16 for at least two days.
