MEDICINE HAT, AB — A petition submitted to the public school by a local parents group has been handed back for the final time.

Board chair Rick Massini said the board received a second petition from the Concerns Parents of SD76 after the first was dismissed for not having enough valid signatures.

The group submitted a second petition asking for more discussion around the policy on LGBTQ students.

Massini said staff have again found inconsistencies in the signatures, including 49 duplicate names.

He said the board remains open to working with members of the group.

“We’ll give the petitioners two more weeks, untill July 21st to get the petition in order and failing that we’re just going to say that’s enough,” he said.

The board voted to amend the policy back in May, which is in line with provincial legislation.

Massini said beyond that change, the group should take their concerns to the province.
