MEDICINE HAT, AB — Unsightly property will be the focus on the Medicine Hat Police Service’s Municipal Bylaw section throughout July.

Unsightly property is defined as property that, in the opinion of a Bylaw Enforcement Officer, is detrimental to the surrounding area due to its condition.

Uncut grass and weeds, inoperable vehicles, accumulation or garbage and litter and a lack of repair and maintenance of the property are among the factors bylaw considers to determine if property is unsightly.

Officers may issue a written direction to the owner or occupants of a property to improve the appearance of the property in a specified way in a specified time period.

Failing to comply with a direction or order can result in fines of $250 for a first offence and $500 for each subsequent offence. The city can also order the property to be cleaned up and bill the owner for the costs of the clean up.
