MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service arrested three drivers during an Enhanced Alberta Checkstop this weekend.

Medicine Hat Police conducted the checkstops from Friday night to Saturday morning at various spots throughout the city. Police searched 1,072 vehicles during the stops.

One person was arrested and charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and driving over 0.08 and two people were arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

Police issued a 30-day licence suspension under the graduated driver licence’s zero-tolerance program for a combination of drug and alcohol consumption, and also issued three-day seizure for immediate roadside sanctions after a driver’s blood alcohol content fell between 50 and 100 milligrams per 100 millilitres. A 24-hour suspension was ordered for another driver for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance.

Police handed out 26 Traffic Safety Act warnings and seven Gaming and Liquor Act warnings, in addition two five liquor tickets and five Traffic Safety Act tickets. A total of eight roadside screening tests were also completed.

Police say they plan to continue checkstops at several points during the summer and remind drivers to plan ahead and not get behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
