MEDICINE HAT, AB – A celebration at the Medicine Hat Drag Strip this past weekend, as fans and racers rang in the 150th Canada Day with burning rubber and fast times.

On Friday, the club held their ‘Ladies Night’ along with their Friday night street legal class.

A strong turnout was seen on Saturday for Canada Day, while on Sunday admission was free with the drivers in elimination races with points on the line.

Darren Sutton comes from the Stettler Car Club and races in the pro and super-pro classes, and said it was a dream to turn a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia into a custom professional racer.

“I was going to build one, and then I went on Kijiji one night and found this one built,” said Sutton. “A guy down in the States built it and I bought it as a roller. I just like to be different, I don’t think I’ve ever seen another one like it.”

Racing at the Medicine Hat track usually at least once a year, he said the downhill slope to the drag strip makes it easier for drivers to push their cars down ahead of races.

Sutton added it was a great weekend celebrating Canada 150, from the race conditions to the company that joined him.

“It’s awesome, I’m here with some friends, my wife, and a couple of friends,” he said. “So, it couldn’t be better, good weather. I don’t golf, I drag race and it’s fun.”

Two days of racing is on the docket for next weekend, with the diesel trucks taking centre stage on July 7 and 8.
