MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education is projecting a deficit for the 2017/2018 school year.

During a special meeting Tuesday night, the board approved its preliminary budget for the upcoming year, which sees a deficit of $204,982 for the year.

The board says a loss of $307,000 from the province’s Small Schools by Necessity funding is one of the reasons for the shortfall, followed by an expected decline of 54.5 students in September. The division is projecting a total of 2,391 students next year.

The board will use some of its reserves to cover the shortfall, leaving it with $1,463,874 this year. The board also said it will eliminate eight teaching positions in the division, primarily through attrition.
