Edmonton health agency issues hepatitis warning after insulin training

Jun 28, 2017 | 1:04 PM

EDMONTON – More than 1,300 people have received letters advising them to get tested for hepatitis B and C because proper procedures weren’t being followed during insulin training sessions at two Edmonton hospitals.

Covenant Health says the patients with diabetes or gestational diabetes who were notified took the training at Grey Nuns or Misericordia hospitals between 2013 and 2016.

The agency says the needles on the saline-filled demonstration pens were changed after each use, but the same reservoirs were used.

Trainers were also allowing people to use their own equipment on the same practice pillow.
