MEDICINE HAT, AB — Sears Canada reported a $300 million loss last year, and after years of struggling and declining sales, it prompted the company to enter into creditor protection.

The retail giant also decided to close 59 stores across the country laying off 2,900 employees in the process including here in Medicine Hat.

For employees being let go, Sears won’t have to provide them a severance.

It’s still unclear exactly when the closures will happen but the company said they want the process completed this year.

There is a silver lining for those workers here in Medicine Hat though.

With HomeSense and Marshalls set to open in the mall redevelopment in August, TJX Canada is holding a hiring fair.

Between the two stores there are 160 positions available, 40 of those will be permanent full-time and part-time positions, the rest will be temporary to get the store set up and running.

The hiring fair began Wednesday and will run through Saturday in the Kiwanis room located in the basement of the Medicine Hat Lodge.

Interested applicants are encouraged to bring a resume and be prepared for an on the spot interview.

A TJX representative said several Sears employees have already applied.

Meanwhile, Sears said its customers can expect to see liquidation sales at locations that are closing including Medicine Hat.

The company stated it also intends to honour warranties on its products even after the store closes.
