MEDICINE HAT, AB — One of the two men charged in connection with a New Year’s Eve homicide has a preliminary hearing set for later this year.

Luke Boxell, 21, appeared in Medicine Hat provincial court on Wednesday, where a three day hearing was set.

The hearing takes place Dec. 6-8 in Medicine Hat, and will determine if there is enough evidence for a trial.

Boxell is charged with second-degree murder alongside Leonard Beaulieu, 24, in connection with the death of Jordan Pede last year.

Pede, 24, was found suffering from a gunshot wound in Strathcona Island Park on New Year’s Eve. He died in a Calgary hospital 11 days later.

Boxell was arrested in Medicine Hat on Jan. 25, while Beaulieu was arrested in Manitoba on Feb. 14.

Boxell is currently out on bail with strict conditions, and is on 24-hour house arrest with family in Manitoba. He is not allowed in Medicine Hat, except for court appearances.

Beaulieu remains in custody and is due back in court on June 27.
