City still investigating the cause of Tuesday’s power outage

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Officials with the City of Medicine Hat say a fault in a power line is to blame for a pole fire that led to 7,000 customers being without power Tuesday night.

Around 6 P.M. electricity went out in near the airport, in Crescent Heights, and on the southeast and southwest hill.

The city says something happened to one of the power lines sparking the pole fire and also causing a grass fire.

Most residents had their power back on within the first 60 to 90 minutes.

Joseph Muglia, general manager for the city’s electric distribution, said the affected electric equipment will need to be replaced.

“There is going to be some cable replacement that will be required,” he said. “Ultimately the pole where the pole fire happened that will also be exchanged.”

Muglia said they tested the pole last night to see if it was compromised and in need of immediate replacement but tests showed it was structurally sound.

Electric crews are still investigating exactly what caused the power line failure.
