MEDICINE HAT, AB — A shining sea of red and white could be seen at St. Michael’s School Tuesday morning.

Catholic schools in Medicine Hat spent the day celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday, with a variety of events scheduled for all students.

At St. Michaels, the day began with an assembly, where students watched videos and performed songs. At the end of the assembly, the students, many clad in red and white, marched through the neighbourhood surrounding the school, waving small Canadian flags.

Several students at the kindergarten to Grade 6 school said the event gave them an appreciation of their country.

“(I liked) people seeing us celebrating Canada’s birthday,” said Danielle Meyers, adding it’s important to mark the day “because we live here.”

Morgan Poirier, when asked why it was important to celebrate the occasion, had one thing to say.

“Canada is awesome.”

Each classroom at the school also collected 150 items for the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank.
