MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Regional Airport is getting federal funding for rehabilitation work for its runways.

The airport is receiving $12,989,598 from Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP), part of $41.7 million in funding for 34 airports across the country. The funding for the airport is the largest under this program.

According to a news release, the fund are earmarked for rehabilitation of Runway 03-21 and Taxiway A at the airport. Some of the funding will also go towards improving drainage at the airport.

Mayor Ted Clugston says the city were initially surprised to receive the funding, since it was more than they had requested. He adds the repairs could help attract more airlines to the city.

“This council has made (the airport) a priority, both (for) economic development and tourism, and what comes with that is better air service,” he said. “You’ve already seen a new airline come, and we’re hoping for more frankly, but we have to have the facilities for them.”

The ACAP provides funding for runway rehabilitation, airfield lighting improvements and to purchase snow and ice removal agreement.
